Greece Monopoly Takes Operations Online

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

Greece is currently in the process of legalizing its online gambling market and opening up players to a wide range of online casino operators. The country’s current monopoly is going to be disbanded, but it still wants to remain involved in the industry. As such, OPAP, is planning to launch its own online gambling website with the help of an existing online casino operator.

Last year, OPAP was in contact with several online gambling operators to negotiate a deal where the hired company would help OPAP launch its new online gambling website. However, the negotiations fell through when the monopoly could not come to a financial agreement with any other online casino companies.

Now, it is back to the drawing board as Greece has continued its talks with Ladbrokes and Playtech. Representatives for the monopoly hope that they can come to an agreement so that OPAP can launch a safe online gambling destination with games that players can enjoy.

Association president says nothing to fear from online gambling.

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011

The next president of the Amusement and Music Operators Association has recently said that operators of jukeboxes and other amusement devices have little to fear from the online gambling trend that is making its way into parts of Canada and perhaps even the state of New Jersey in the United States.

Donovan Fremin has said that coin operated amusement devices have nothing to fear from the new ventures in online gambling since the two different entertainment mediums appeal to different audiences. His company, Delta Music, has operated alongside online gambling devices for years and he assures his membership they have nothing to fear because the Internet-based model isn’t competition.

At the present time there are two bills in California and New Jersey respectively that are on their way to becoming laws that would permit online gambling in either state. Meanwhile in Canada there are several provinces that have online poker and other games available and the biggest province there, Ontario, is striving to get all the information together to have an online casino of its own in the near future.

With the advent of online gambling in the United States, several different concerns have come to the forefront including the possibility of more people addicted to Internet online gambling.

$29.3 Billion Generated according to Gaming Consultants

Monday, February 21st, 2011

Over the course of 2010, 12% of the online gambling industry has grown. At almost $30 billion dollars, the online gambling industry has been doing well and showing improvement. 12% in this case, is a small number, but substantial, especially considering it’s only a year’s worth of growth.

A new report published by Global Betting and Gaming Consultants states this growth of 2010’s online gambling industry at 12%. The numbers being reported by Global Betting and Gaming Consultants are not proof of the financial figures that support their 12% gain in the online gambling industry. For the past 2 years, the online gambling industry has shown signs of improvement in all areas of the industry, which may have contributed to this 12% gain that is being reported.

The online gambling industry is now worth $29.3 billion, according to the new report by Global Betting and Gaming Consultants. Areas like sportsbetting, online casino, online poker and online bingo were assessed for this report. Sportsbetting accounts for 41%, while online casinos and online poker websites account for 46%. Online bingo contributed a surprising $1.3 billion towards that $29.3 billion in 2010.

It is predicted that over the next three years, the online gambling industry is going to continually generate billions, hitting the $40 billion mark within that period of time.

2010 saw many countries start regulating their online gambling markets and also lifting bans, which may have contributed to this %12 gain. So far this year, this trend has continued.

Global Interactive Gambling Market Report Says Online Gambling Industry Worth Billions

Friday, February 18th, 2011

A new report out states that the global online gambling industry is worth close to £15 billion as of last year and with the rise in mobile applications which allow smart phone users to take advantage of online poker and other games, that number is only expected to rise.

Global Betting & Gaming Consultants (GBGC) was the company that conducted the survey and the CEO was recently interviewed and was understandably excited about all the different prospects for online gambling worldwide. He mentioned the fact that in Europe there are two countries, France and Italy, that have just come on board and another seven that are putting forward legislation in 2011 to become part of the online gambling community.

Online gambling has been steadily growing in popularity and in 2007 it accounted for 5.7% of the overall gambling market, but those numbers are expected to rise to 9.4% by the year 2012. Warwick Bartlett, GBGC’s CEO, says that some nation’s focus on the problems associated with addictive behavior in online gambling are generally unfounded. He mentions that alcohol related deaths account for a much bigger problem in countries like the United Kingdom than online poker or any other online gambling game.

Culture Secretary calls for standards in online gambling

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

According to the Independent Study for Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), approximately one million people in Britain regularly gamble online. This statistic represents almost one third of the entire European population and of this estimate, women represent a growing percentage of the gambling population estimating up to 30% of hits to UK gambling sites during the World Cup matches alone.

Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell seems to be picking up on this trend. She recently entered the fray by calling the UK the hallmark for standards for online gambling and saying that she hoped more companies considered the move to that nation to set up shop. Although she did concede there would be some benefits to the governments regulating online gambling games, Jowell insisted the fundamental driver behind the new government push was protection of the public from unscrupulous behavior from offshore online gambling casinos.

Under the proposed government regulations, online gambling websites would not be allowed to target children with their advertising and customers would need to be informed on a constant basis about how much money they had spent on any of the games including online poker and online slots.

Other government ministers have conceded that the project is both ambitious and complicated but the government has presented a united front that regulating online gambling in this way will be well worth it and in the best interest of the public in the end.

Devilfish Poker Looking Ahead to 2011

Thursday, December 30th, 2010

While you might know the name Dave “Devilfish” Ulliott, you might not be familiar with his online poker company. Dave is the UK poker player who had earnings of over $5.8 million. So when the news was released in 2005 to much fanfare that he was starting an online poker site, Devilfish Poker, people began expecting big things. So far those things haven’t materialized but the company is expecting a better year in 2011.

However, there was soon trouble. The Kahnawake licensed site didn’t get the UK’s proper approval and the site was restricted from advertising to its niche market. Although the customer base finally grew to 5,000 players in 12 months, the firm had some real economic trouble and lost over £600,000 in 2009 and more than £2m in 2010.

Officials for the company offered several reasons including a troubled financial climate as well as the growing tendency in the online poker market for mergers where bigger firms incorporated smaller ones.

Still, the CEO Paul Barnes is looking forward to the new year being much better for the company. He said recently that the brand has more of a market share now and that he believes it is in a better position to capitalize on the market in general.
