The Cheaters of Online Gambling
Thursday, November 27th, 2008Ever feel like something was taken from you? Well several of the online gamblers playing in two particular poker rooms did. Due to the deregulation and politics surrounding online gambling in the US two players at Ultimate Bet and Absolute Poker were cheated to the tune of 20 Million dollars.
Airing on 60 minutes will be the true story trying to get to the bottom of this online scandal. It is known that the online gaming software had been illegally adjusted such that certain players within a poker hand were able to view all the hands that the other players were dealt while still have the access to remain in the game and take part in the rest of the hand giving them the direct opportunity to forecast their next move and ultimately win almost every hand.
While players often felt that the system was flawed it was difficult to find the origin of the problem and the online gambling websites continued to operate as normal. While some keener players continued to track results and deemed it almost impossible for those winning players to win simply as often as they did.
One player who happened to be a computer security specialist and watched and monitered the hands played said “…they were winning at about 15 standard deviations above the mean…approximately equivalent to winning a one-in-a-million jackpot six consecutive times.”
Both online casinos and their licensing partners were shocked at the scandal and released appeals saying that all the previous problems with the software had been fixed and the people that did this were old employees that had been fired as soon as the situation was clear.
