U.S. Wire Act Revision Could Be Reversed

Thursday, December 29th, 2011

It’s been a roller coaster ride this past year for the online gambling industry, and with 2012 just days away, now is the time to take a look at the past year, as well as look at the big changes that have been made.

At the beginning of 2011, many online casino operators were shut out of the United States, and as a result, many European online casino operators lost quite a bit of revenue that they would have normally got from U.S. players. The reason being as to why online casino operators were shut out of the United States is because it is illegal to gamble online, and there was a growing concern of offshore gambling as well.

Fast forward a few months later, and Black Friday hit. It may have hit the United States, but it affected the entire gambling industry, especially the poker industry around the globe. Essentially, player confidence was down, and many countries cracked down and got even stricter with their online gambling laws.

The U.K. and many parts of Europe have been successful at keeping online gambling around, and developing great laws that protect players. Across the ocean, the United States has been toughing it out, working tirelessly for legalized online gambling in some states.

It looks like the U.S. will have an easier time of online gambling and making it happen, now that the Obama administration has revised the 1961 Wire Act, changing it so that it only applies to sports betting, instead of applying it to all forms of gambling. With 2012 just days away, it looks like the start of a good year for the gambling industry in the United States, and perhaps, the United Kingdom will benefit from this as well.

Facebook Contemplates Entrance Into UK Online Gambling Market

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

The ever expanding Facebook could possibly be expanding into the booming online gambling industry. Facebook seems to be seriously considering this, and by entering into the online gambling industry, they stand to bring in millions in revenue, especially if people would be able to play with real money.

Facebook played dinner host last week in London for industry representatives, and that’s when Facebook unveiled their latest plans. Shortly after that dinner, many Facebook users found out about their plans, and there has been a lot of backlash, especially in the United Kingdom.

The Daily Mail published an article that highlighted some of many negative reactions to the news that Facebook may start offering real money online gambling on the social networking site.

More than anything, it seems that in The Daily Mail article, there was a huge concern over underage gambling. In the United Kingdom, there are over 3 million users on Facebook that are between the ages of 13 to 17. On top of that, there’s an unaccounted number of users that have lied about their age in order to be able to have a Facebook user account, because the age limit is set at 13 years old.

Online gambling has been expanding around the globe at a rapid pace, but to bring real money online gambling to a social networking site like Facebook may perhaps be too soon. It has not been reported whether or not Facebook would also be attempting to enter the North American online gambling market.

William Hill And Playtech Relationship Soured

Thursday, November 10th, 2011

It seemed like the perfect match. The big European gambling website, and the giant gambling software supplier. William Hill and Playtech. They probably thought the same thing too, back in 2008 when they formed a partnership.

At the time, it made sense to make this deal. William Hill is a gambling website that needs gambling software, and Playtech develops gambling software. Besides the financial benefit, there was also the partnership that must have appealed to both the companies at the time. In exchange for gaming software, William Hill gave Playtech a 29 percent share of the company.

The first two years were blissful, but then somehow in the third year, things have just gotten worse. The latest bump in the road is the William Hill and Probability deal that was supposed to go down. William hill was looking to expand into the mobile gambling arena, and Probability was there way to do that. Playtech was having none of that, and since they have a 29 percent share, they actually get a say. Unfortunately, it looks like William Hill has missed out on a great business venture, and Playtech has just made things even more unbearable for William Hill. At this point, to say the relationship is souring is being nice. Judging by all of the actions taken against one another, it looks more like the relationship has soured considerably. It’ll take a miracle to fix the mess these two great companies are in.

European Union Members Discuss Online Gambling Future

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

This week, a much needed conference of the European Union (EU) parliamentarians and industry representatives happened, with the collective objective to find a way ahead for online gambling. Each member state decides their stance on online gambling, and unfortunately, there has been much fragmentation between each state, as well as complications. There are also court actions by online gambling companies against state owned monopolies which have also made things complicated.

Many representatives of member nations wanted harmonized legislation across the European Union, and then at the same time, went so far as to have it qualified with a rider that would serve individual member states, and allow them to enact rules to suit their national interests.

The European Parliament’s response to the Green Paper consultative initiative is being drawn up by German liberal MEP Creutzmann, He has voiced his opinion on online gambling regulation, saying that member states should be able to decide how they would like to regulate online gambling for theirselves. The only real benefit of having harmonized legislation across the European Union is that national regulators will keep each other informed on their policies, and incidents of fraud or revocation of licenses can be communicated.

Online gambling regulation is a big concern for many, especially with so many offshore online casino operators that are legal and illegal. One thing is for sure, online gambling regulation has many benefits all around, including player safety.

Global Interactive Gambling Market Report Says Online Gambling Industry Worth Billions

Friday, February 18th, 2011

A new report out states that the global online gambling industry is worth close to £15 billion as of last year and with the rise in mobile applications which allow smart phone users to take advantage of online poker and other games, that number is only expected to rise.

Global Betting & Gaming Consultants (GBGC) was the company that conducted the survey and the CEO was recently interviewed and was understandably excited about all the different prospects for online gambling worldwide. He mentioned the fact that in Europe there are two countries, France and Italy, that have just come on board and another seven that are putting forward legislation in 2011 to become part of the online gambling community.

Online gambling has been steadily growing in popularity and in 2007 it accounted for 5.7% of the overall gambling market, but those numbers are expected to rise to 9.4% by the year 2012. Warwick Bartlett, GBGC’s CEO, says that some nation’s focus on the problems associated with addictive behavior in online gambling are generally unfounded. He mentions that alcohol related deaths account for a much bigger problem in countries like the United Kingdom than online poker or any other online gambling game.

Playtech is going Classy

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Classic characters and classic television have become the source of Playtech’s newest recently launched games. Characters like Rocky, the Pink Panther, and shows like Blockbusters have been the inspiration behind these theme games Playtech is becoming known for.

Playtech has in the past, launched many successful theme games with titles and characters from under the Paramount and Marvel umbrella. Because the characters are more well known, these theme games are more popular than ever. Features like bonus rounds and progressive jackpots are a typical offer of most slot games, but how about a 5 reel 25 payline video with film footage from Rocky to really pump you up?

Slot games are not the only gaming format that have a retro theme nowadays. There’s also the newly released Blockbusters Bingo. Inspired by the 1980′s television show, the look and feel of Blockbusters Bingo is spot on, using the famous theme song, numbers instead of letters, and bingo cards with yellow hexagons.

Fun themes with popular characters, plus great graphics, and great sound make for a clear winner every time, and that’s exactly what Playtech produces. Anything this good needs recognition, and Playtech certainly got it at the EGaming Review, taking home the Poker Network of the Year, Poker Software Supplier of the Year and Bingo Supplier of the Year awards.

A Centurion Promotion at InterPoker!

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

The Centurion promotion at InterPoker started May 14th, and has 7 levels in total that span over the course of 4 weeks from May 14th to June 10th. Even though it’s 4 days in, players still have until May 20th to make it into level 2, which they can do by collecting 100 Centurion points.

The prize pot is $2000, and will be split amongst the last players standing at the end of the promotion.

To get started, players will have to collect 100 Centurion points to qualify for the next level. They’ll have to keep collecting 100 Centurion points all the way up to level 1 if they want a piece of the $2000 prize pool. 1 point is awarded for every $.25 raked in, so if a player were to rake in $25, that’d be 100 Centurion points right there. Each level has a time limit, so if you don’t collect the 100 Centurion points before the end of each period, you don’t advance.

The first level started on May 14th, and ends May 20th. The second level starts May 21st, and ends 6 days later on the 26th. The third level starts May 27th, and ends on May31st. The fourth level starts on June 1st, and last for 4 days, ending on June 4th. The fifth level starts on June 5th, and ends on June 7th. The sixth level starts on June 8th, and ends on June 9th. The final level 7 is on June 10th.

If a player has no problem with collecting over 100 Centurion points per level, then they can play for the $10,000 prize pot by playing in the Platinum Centurion.
