Investors Told to Take Caution With Gambling Stocks

Wednesday, February 1st, 2012

The UK’s online gambling market is expected to see a great deal of changes this year. The introduction of a new tax will see profits decline for UK-based companies that have recently moved offshore, analysts to caution investors against putting too much faith in gambling stocks this year.

Ladbrokes, William Hill and Betfair are three companies listed on the London Stock Exchange. Over the course of the past few years, however, all three have moved to offshore locations to avoid paying steep gambling taxes to the government. While the move initially helped to improve their profits, the UK Gambling Commission has found a way to close the loophole by requiring offshore operators to obtain new licenses.

This is likely to have a detrimental effect on these companies and their profits, and the turmoil is likely to travel down into the pockets of investors. With profits expected to wane as a result of the new taxes, investors are have been warned against working with gambling stocks.

Already, prices are beginning to drop, as Ladbrokes has seen a 2p decline and William Hill has dropped by at least 4p. Things aren’t looking good for UK gambling stocks this year, since the year has already gotten off to a bad start.

William Hill Opposes UK Plans

Tuesday, November 29th, 2011

The United Kingdom’s got plans to change remote gambling industry laws, and William Hill has spoken out about this, expressing their opposition.

As one of the United Kingdom’s oldest bookmakers, William Hill entered into the online gambling industry in its early stages. The reason why William Hill opposes these new plans from the United Kingdom to change remote gambling industry laws is because they believe that these new law changes are going to drive away players onto online casino websites that are not regulated.

William Hill feels so strongly about this that they’ve even hired representation from Deloitte to fight on their behalf. One spokesperson compared this asking the government if they should introduce a policy which distorts markets.

Worth an estimated $1.7 billion, the gambling market is huge. The Treasury is reviewing things, and will finish their review soon. What this means is that the Treasury could also be approving some of the proposed law changes that could mean a bigger tax take for the United Kingdom.

There’s a real possibility that because of new tax law changes, legitimate gambling firms will pull out of the United Kingdom’s market. As a result of this, many online gamblers will likely gamble offshore, on illegal websites.

William Hill And Playtech Relationship Soured

Thursday, November 10th, 2011

It seemed like the perfect match. The big European gambling website, and the giant gambling software supplier. William Hill and Playtech. They probably thought the same thing too, back in 2008 when they formed a partnership.

At the time, it made sense to make this deal. William Hill is a gambling website that needs gambling software, and Playtech develops gambling software. Besides the financial benefit, there was also the partnership that must have appealed to both the companies at the time. In exchange for gaming software, William Hill gave Playtech a 29 percent share of the company.

The first two years were blissful, but then somehow in the third year, things have just gotten worse. The latest bump in the road is the William Hill and Probability deal that was supposed to go down. William hill was looking to expand into the mobile gambling arena, and Probability was there way to do that. Playtech was having none of that, and since they have a 29 percent share, they actually get a say. Unfortunately, it looks like William Hill has missed out on a great business venture, and Playtech has just made things even more unbearable for William Hill. At this point, to say the relationship is souring is being nice. Judging by all of the actions taken against one another, it looks more like the relationship has soured considerably. It’ll take a miracle to fix the mess these two great companies are in.

William Hill Deal With Probability Off

Thursday, November 3rd, 2011

William Hill has been having an interesting time lately, with lots of highs and lows and rumours all around. The latest news is that they will not be making an offer on Probability, a mobile specialist. The news was revealed earlier, and its not surprising that many have speculated that the reason being for this latest outcome is the online joint venture with Playtech, which is William Hill Online.

A statement to the stock exchange revealed very little information, and stated that William Hill did not intend to make an offer. Since then, there has been no other comments on their latest move.

The joint venture that Playtech has seems to be the culprit as to why this deal did not go down. Playtech owns a mobile specialist already, called Mobenga. Because of this, William Hill will have to seek a partnership with another mobile specialist, or they can wait for their partnership with Playtech to end. From there, William Hill will be able to make a deal with Probability.

Mobile gambling has really taken off this year. With the number of smartphone users continually increasing, being able to offer mobile gambling has become a top priority to many online casino operators.

Live casinos are an exciting new trend in online gambling

Thursday, March 24th, 2011

Last year over 90 live dealer casinos were introduced making live casinos one of the fastest growing areas of the online gambling industry. Unlike computer simulations in regular online casinos, live casinos have living, breathing dealers in charge of the games. A steamed video link allows players to watch the dealer roll the dice, spin the wheel, or deal the cards and by using an instant messaging chat function, players can interact directly with the dealer or pit boss and other players online.

In keeping with this exciting new trend, Right Casino Media has just introduced a new website, LiveCasinos.co.uk. Right Casino Media based in the UK provides casino reviews and advertising solutions to some of the largest online gambling companies in the UK such as Ladbrokes, William Hill, 888 Casino and Bet365.

The new website will operate as a live casino review site and target players in the UK market. Online gambling experts will contribute their expertise to reviewing the best and worst live casinos, provide information about available games and live dealers, payout rates and live casino bonuses. Currently, LiveCasinos.co.uk. operates twelve live casino sites created to help players find reputable online casino sites that are safe, enjoyable and government regulated.

Gibraltar Raises Online Gambling Taxes

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010

Gibraltar is a popular destination for online gambling operators, as it presents some of the lowest tax requirements of any country. Large companies like Ladbrokes and William Hill have already made the move from the UK to Gibraltar because of this, but now the country has decided to raise its taxes.

Currently, Gibraltar charges online gambling operators only 1% on their gross profits and the amount is capped at £425,000 per year. This has been a very attractive prospect for many online casino owners, causing many to relocate to this area.

Beginning in January 2011, Gibraltar’s tax regulations will be increased to 10%. While it is a significant jump, this tax requirement is far less than many other countries in Europe. For example, the UK charges well over 20% to its online gambling operators.

Online casino owners also agree. Victor Chandler, owner of Victor Chandler online casino, was quoted as saying that the new taxes are not likely to affect the online gambling industry. Operators in Gibraltar are still paying far less than they would be in other locations, and it is unlikely that many operators will be leaving the country.

William Hill Employees to Receive Underage Gambling Training

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

Underage gambling is becoming an increasingly prevalent problem in the UK. Over the past decade is has become easier for underage gamblers to assume fake identities in order to wager on sporting events. Up until recently, the problem has been ignored, but now William Hill online casino is looking for a way to combat the issue.

In 2009, a study conducted by the UK Gambling Commission indicated that 98% of bookmakers across the UK allow underage individuals to place bets on various sporting events. The Association of British Bookmakers called the statistics embarrassing and are looking for ways to ensure that the percentage decreases significantly over the course of the next year.

William Hill ensures that 8100 of its employees have undergone extensive training, including workshops that inform them how to deal with a situation when they encounter an underage gambler. By October, William Hill will train an additional 2000, ensuring that its entire staffed has obtained sufficient training on how to deal with the issue.
